And how can Mr Torre say that Charice is not an "exceptionally lovely Oriental"? If not, then how come the world LOVES charice, how come audiences worldwide ACCEPT and have standing ovations over her even though she is not white or mestiza, how come she is the only filipina who has ever captivated the hollywood scene? Is Mr Torre blind, or does he have a one-sided narrow view / definition of "lovely" ? In fact Charice is now considered "hot" by US standards (do a search) and her looks improve everyday. No matter what her looks are, she is exceptionally LOVELY in my standard because she has already achieved EXCEPTIONAL adulation worldwide! geesh...

I think Charice should play Ms Saigon - she deserves it and is way way above Thia Megia in acting and singing skills. If you see Charice now, she is beautiful and hot and suits the role well. She also has that "spunk" that is required in a Ms Saigon role - an innocent girl who also knows how to fight for her son, her man, and has the convincing angst to contemplate suicide (as the role requires). Anna Maria de Tagle can be an effective Gigi, and ohh alright include Thia Megia as one of the vietnamese dancers - in fact giver her singing and speaking portions (the movie version is usually a bit changed from the play) but dont let her play Kim. This would be a good stepping stone for Thia and she should be grateful to even be included. Definitely only someone as unique and spectacular and audience-wowing-everywhere as Charice deserves the Ms Saigon role.

Frank in this bloggers' era your way of thinking and style of writing is a good example to follow. Wow! and so I heard about Torre an intelligent yet ignorant writer. Oh well, Charice have captured the hearts of millions, so this noisy nuisance doesn't even matter. But I admire his guts to show his hollow self for the sake of attention. I don't have anything against those young actors and actresses in our country but I can no longer enjoy watching slang Tagalog, it irritates my ears. Physique over talent is the fad in PI showbiz.Filipinos' perception of beauty is being screwed up by it. I suppose Torre supports such mentality..Sorry I just had to let it out.

I think Charice would be PERFECT to play Kim. The western stage has portrayed Kim to the likes of mestiza beauties like Lea Salonga or Monique Wilson - but they are not the typical exotic Asian type beauties foreigners usually go for. Most foreigners go for the short, morena, flat nosed asian woman - and for a GI to fall in love with a petite feisty beaty epitomized by Charice' looks is quite realistic for me. That and her powerful voice, experience, and worldwide fame... Charice is a sure winner for the role of Kim.

Thanks for the response to Torre! Torre is a cunt who likes to encourage the western way of thinking and the western ideals of beauty that has plagued Filipino culture for decades... Witht Vicki Bello and the like on his side, the PI entertainment industry just reinforces this sad backwards thinking!

Mr. Hilario, you hit the nail on the head! This is a great foil to Mr. Torre's article on Charice. Your article is eloquent without acquiescing to tabloid reporting. Not that Mr. Torre writes for the tabloids. For a writer of his stature (I have nothing but respect for him), his latest outing (on Charice) nearly transcended the fine line between responsible broadsheet journalism and tabloid sensationalism. Just my two cents...
